Ear Irrigation

WHAT IS IT?

Ear irrigation is performed by doctors, audiologists, and nurses. This procedure has replaced the old-fashioned technique of ear syringing. As it is more effective and safer to perform. Usually, the procedure takes between 15 to 30 minutes. This depends on how deep the ear wax is inside the ear, the amount, and the type of ear wax. For best preparation, we recommend using olive oil drops 3 to 4 days before the appointment. This allows the ear wax to soften.

This method is only used upon request by the patient, or a decision made by our audiologist. We do not undertake this procedure on patients with perforation and mastoid cavity. In addition, to those who had ear surgery within the last 18 months, or had an ear infection in the past 6 weeks.

How is it performed?

Ear irrigation is either done manually or with an electronic machine. The ear irrigation machine contains a reservoir unit for the water. Firstly, a hand-held nozzle gently sprays the water into the ear canal, where we control the pressure of the water and adjust it accordingly to remove the ear wax. For manual ear irrigation, we warm the water to body temperature and carefully spray into the ear canal. Usually, the person’s head is slightly tilted, and the nozzle is adjusted into the ear at different angles. We ensure the water dislodges and flushes out the ear wax effectively which we collect in a basin. We repeat this several times to ensure we remove the ear wax. At Direct Ear Care, before and after pictures of the ears are shown.
